UV Crack Detection

Student working in the lab with UV light

Kaihua Zhang, Graduate Student Research Assistant from Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, simulates marine structures in real world degradation while recording the crack length using UV light and a GoPro camera inside the Gerstacker Engineering Research Building at the Materials Science and Engineering Lab Room 1020 on Wednesday, February 6, 2019. Photos of the crack are quickly analyzed by computer vision algorithms to calculate the length. The developed method can be applied to ships for monitoring structural health.
