Brown building on North Campus at the University of Michigan on October 4, 2019. Siloxanes are an environmentally benign family of chemicals entering our waste streams through everyday products. These chemicals affect the combustion of biogas harvested from landfills and wastewater treatment facilities, prompting engine manufacturers to impose limits on the use of siloxane in their systems. Margaret Wooldridge, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of mechanical engineering, worked with Schwind to study how siloxane affects the combustion of biogas in order to take advantage of its positive combustion properties and prevent any negative effect on engine performance.
