Origin of the Observation

A shift in focus by the University over a century ago helped define its students, researchers, and work they produce.

University students view the moon through a telescope at the Detroit Observatory on the central campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI on October 10, 2016.

The Observatory was built in 1854 as a means to establish the 'U' as a research institution, enabling classes in astronomy to be taught.
