NAME alumni awarded at 2019 SNAME Maritime Convention

NAME alumni, Jeffrey J. Hough, Richard D’Souza, and Robert G. Keane, Jr. will all receive medals and awards at the upcoming Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Maritime Convention in Tacoma, WA.

Hough (NAME BSE ’78, MSE ’79) will receive The David W. Taylor Medal for notable achievement in Naval Architecture and/or Marine Engineering. Hough, Senior Scientist and Technical Manager, is the US Navy Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Distinguished Engineer for Ship Design at Naval Surface Warfare Center – Carderock (NSWC-CD). He is a USN Acquisition Professional with over 40 years of experience in naval engineering and shipbuilding. He is an expert in naval ship design, design process, and computer-aided design having published technical papers in these areas.

He was Director of the US Navy’s Center for Innovation in Ship Design, and Division Head Future Concepts and Ship Design Integration Processes at NSWC-CD. Previously he was a Senior Naval Architect for ship design and acquisition at NAVSEA headquarters working on ship design teams for over 20 naval ship programs. He was an R&D program manager for pre-acquisition ship design efforts and ship design planning, and the Affordability Through Commonality program; Division Director for HM&E R&D; and Division Director – Future Fleet and Force Concepts Division. He received BSE (1978) and MSE (1979) degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from The University of Michigan, and is a 1994 graduate of the Defense Systems Management College Advanced Program Management Course. Mr. Hough is a SNAME Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Naval Engineers.

Richard D’Souza (NAME MSE ’74) will receive The Blakely Smith Medal for Outstanding Accomplishment in Ocean Engineering.

D’Souza’s entire 41-year career was devoted to the Offshore Industry. He pioneered the designs of Floating Drilling and Production Platforms as their capabilities progressed from operating in 300m to 3000m of water. He was a founding member of Omega Marine Engineering that grew into one of the most successful Offshore Engineering Companies in the industry. He also built KBR’s consultancy, including Granherne, GVA and Energo, into a deepwater industry leader. Active in SNAME since 1973 he was elected Fellow in 2015. He is the recipient of the Elmer Sperry, ABS/Linnard and SNAME Texas Section Lifetime Achievement awards. He has been a tireless advocate for the rightful role of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers in the Offshore Industry. His greatest achievements, besides his 40-year marriage to Rena and children Neisha and Rohan, are his 80 technical publications advancing deepwater technology and the three generations of Offshore Engineers he has mentored. He has been privileged to work with many offshore industry pioneers including most of the previous Blakely Smith medal recipients.

Robert G. Keane, Jr (NAME MSE ’70), along with Capt. Barry Tibbits, USN (Ret.), will receive The ABS Captain Joseph H. Linnard Prize for Best Paper Contributed to the Annual Meeting and Appearing in SNAME’s Transactions for their paper, “The Goldilocks Effect in Naval Ship design: Too Little, Too Much, Just Right.
