Postdoctoral researcher Shanbin Shi joins RPI faculty

Dr. Shanbin Shi, a former postdoctoral researcher in Professor Xiaodong Sun’s research group, has joined the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) as a tenure-track assistant professor of nuclear engineering.

As a postdoctoral researcher in Sun’s U-M lab, Shi was able to improve the liquid-phase velocity and turbulence measurements for gas-liquid two-phase flows using particle image velocimetry by reducing its measurement uncertainties. He also participated in designing and testing a post-critical-heat-flux (CHF) heat transfer test facility to support model development for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s system analysis code TRACE.

At RPI, Shi plans to develop research programs for innovative nuclear system design, key component design optimization, instrumentation development and system modeling to explore a diverse range of options for Gen-IV nuclear reactors.

Shi earned his PhD in nuclear engineering from Purdue University in 2015. He came to the U-M NERS department as a postdoc in January 2017.
