Byron Tasseff awarded NSF Fellowship

Incoming IOE PhD student Byron Tasseff is a 2016 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship awardee. He’s one of four awardees for the fellowship in the field of Industrial Engineering. Current IOE PHD student Lauren Steimle is another recipient and two other current students, Emily Tucker and Wesley Marrero Colon, received honorable mentions for the fellowship.

The title of Byron’s proposed project is “Mixed-integer, PDE-constrained Optimization: Flood Mitigation.” Floods are the world’s most frequent natural disaster. Despite their severe consequences, mitigation efforts are commonly developed ad hoc. This research suggests a more principled approach, in which optimization and the physics of flooding are combined to propose more effective flood mitigation strategies for areas at risk. The approach raises fundamental computational challenges, as it requires solving a discrete optimization problem over nonlinear partial differential equations representing the flood behavior.

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and in STEM education.  The fellowship provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM and STEM education.

Byron will be joining IOE in September 2016 and will be jointly advised by by Pascal Van Hentenryck (IOE, University of Michigan) and Russell Bent (Los Alamos National Laboratory).
