Fei Wen, Dow Corning Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering, was one of five faculty members to win the Provost’s Teaching Innovation Prize (TIP). Her project was titled “Identify-Solve-Broadcast Students’ Own Mass and Heat Transfer Phenomena.” Fei will receive her award on the opening day of the Enriching Scholarship Program on Monday, May 2, at the Michigan League.
She received the award for her creative approaches of challenging ChE 342 students with a multimedia assignment, where short YouTube videos were created by student teams showcasing a mass or heat transfer principle. “The students responded enthusiastically to meaningful opportunities for autonomy and creativity,” Fei says. She added that careful scaffolding of the video project process by the instructor can ensure that rigor is not lost in the fun. “The Fun of Mass and Heat Transfer” student videos can be viewed at http://tinyurl.com/FeiWenTIP.
An article of this work is scheduled to be published in Chemical Engineering Education this fall.
