Phillip Savage wins 2014 Michigan Catalysis Society Parravano Award

Phillip Savage, Interim Chair and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Chemical Engineering at University of Michigan, has been selected as the winner of the 2014 Michigan Catalysis Society Parravano Award for Excellence in Catalysis Research and Development. Professor Savage will give an Award Keynote Lecture at the 35th Annual Michigan Catalysis Society Spring Symposium, which will be held on May 8, 2014 at the General Motors Global R&D Center in Warren, Michigan.

Savage was chosen for his pioneering work in the area of catalysis under supercritical water conditions. He has championed this area of catalysis research for many years, now to be rewarded in recent years with the emergence of this technology as a route to catalytic biomass conversion.

The award is given in honor of Giuseppe Parravano, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Michigan from 1958 until his death in 1978. His early work at Michigan was characterized by the application of physical chemical techniques, which served for more complex systems. In his last 10 years of research he contributed frequently to the studies in the areas of electrochemical initiation of polymerization reactions, the measurement and use of chemical relaxation times to elucidate surface kinetics, and measurement of the activity of solid catalysts for oxygen and hydrogen transfer.
