Device aims to stop the ringing in your ears

Have you ever heard a mysterious “ringing” in your ears? This disorder, called Tinnitus, affects an estimated 50 million Americans – and requires around $2.26 billion annually in treatment costs. It is caused by damage to the ears by loud noises, and the problem is growing in people under the age of 20 who are using earbuds and mp3 players on a regular basis. Researchers at the University of Michigan are working on a device to treat the disorder, which targets the nerves in the jaw and face with sound and electrical stimulation to reduce the hyperactivity in the nerves that can lead to Tinnitus.

About the Professor

Dr. Susan Shore is a professor of Otolaryngology, Molecular and Integrative Physiology and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan College of Engineering. As Director of the Sensory Neurobiology Laboratory, her objectives are to study the roles of neural connections from other parts of the brain to the auditory brain stem.
