John P. McCarthy awarded College of Engineering Alumni Award

The College of Engineering Alumni Awards honor those alumni who personify the College’s tradition of excellence.| Short Read

The awards are presented at the Alumni Awards Dinner, which is traditionally held during Michigan Engineering Homecoming Weekend each fall.

John McCarthy Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Award Recipient.

John McCarthy is 2012 recipient of the Alumni Society Merit Award for Civil and Environmental Engineering. John received a BSE degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural Emphasis in 1978 and a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering in Structural Engineering 1982. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of MI, IA, IN, and TN. John has spent more than 30 years’ in the building and engineering industry. Among the many projects with which he has been involved are hospitals, water and waste water treatment plants, and nuclear power plants. Currently, he works for Black & Veatch. Prior to that, he was VP and Director of Structural Engineering at the SmithGroup. Over many years, John has been the driving force in shaping the scope and context for the capstone design projects in our CEE 402 Senior Design course.
